Auto IK stands for Auto Inverse Kinematics. Which basically means that the position and rotation for the other bones are automatically calculated based on the bone you are modifying.
i don't waste my time with rigging bones anymore - i think the fun part is the constraint systems...i just run my meshes thru the mixamo auto-rigger (mixamo.com/upload_character). good tutorial tho.
