There have been violent riots during an anti-government rally in the Bulgarian capital Sofia.

The unrest erupted during a peaceful protest in front of parliament where more than 2,000 people had gathered.

They said they were fed up with life in what they describe as the European Unions poorest and most corrupt nation.

Opinion polls show that 70 percent of Bulgarias 7.6 million people want the government to resign.

Protestors hurled snowballs and bottles at parliament. Some even threw metal bars and cobblestones dug up from the road at shop windows and vehicles.

Six police officers and several protestors were wounded. More than 50 people were arrested.

The riots are the worst in Sofia in more than a decade. Mass rallies and strikes in 1997 toppled the then socialist government.
