To call it uniquely accountable for racism since is untrue, re-writing history. 'What really is the truth' (?) is a valid question. Surely Popeye & Betty Boop deserve their fair share of the blame, not to forget real people and polemicists who influenced the masses on a day-to-day basis, in the light of day. Griffith was an artist, presenting the popular beliefs of the south in that horrid period, he was not a racist or propagandist. He was deeply horrified by the rise of the KKK in the 1920's.

Great, make Griffith look like the boogedy man...oooo, spooky.
Harry Belafonte was only wrong once in his speaking career, at my last count. When he said 'The Birth of a Nation' "impacted upon America's racial psyche in ways that we've never recovered from. As a matter of fact the way in which Hollywood has since played out [the film's] existence still sustains that mentality, that cruelty, and still sustains that misinformation."
This makes me sad, to hear him so morally black-and-white.

I saw a showing of "Rebirth of a Nation" a couple of years ago in SF and it was one of the most astonishing shows I had ever seen. Not only did DJ Spooky play three turn tables at the same time he also did real time video manipulation. Although I saw the film in a film history class before then it hit like a hammer after DJ Spooky's reworking.

I like how its letting you know of the importance of propoganda and what an impact it has in this aspect. It seems to have lead to more productions of the views portrayed in it. Which is evil and has been a deep reality today. I wonder if the cigarette smoking was already being used as advertising at this point. That would be a trip.
