on a more serious note: i can tell you how it works in switzerland. there are two versions of the "oath" they take, i'll try to give you an english version of the one without god in it: "i solemnly vow to uphold constitution and laws and to diligently fulfil the duties of my office." they don't swear on anything, i guess you could say they pledge to the people.
