Official Video.

Thrown like a star in my vast sleep
I open my eyes to take a peep
To find that I was by the sea
Gazing with tranquillity.
'Twas then when the Hurdy Gurdy Man
Came singing songs of love,
Then when the Hurdy Gurdy Man
Came singing songs of love.
Hurdy gurdy, hurdy gurdy, hurdy gurdy, gurdy he sang.
Hurdy gurdy, hurdy gurdy, hurdy gurdy, gurdy he sang.
Hurdy gurdy, hurdy gurdy, hurdy gurdy, gurdy he sang.
Histories of ages past
Unenlightened shadows cast
Down through all eternity
The crying of humanity.
'Tis then when the Hurdy Gurdy Man
Comes singing songs of love,
Then when the Hurdy Gurdy Man
Comes singing songs of love.
Hurdy gurdy, hurdy gurdy, hurdy gurdy, gurdy he sang.
Hurdy gurdy, hurdy gurdy, hurdy gurdy, hurdy gurdy, hurdy gurdy.
Hurdy gurdy, hurdy gurdy, hurdy gurdy, gurdy he sang.
Hurdy gurdy, hurdy gurdy, hurdy gurdy, gurdy he sang.
Here comes the roly poly man and he's singing songs of love,
Roly poly, roly poly, roly poly, poly he sang.
Hurdy gurdy, hurdy gurdy, hurdy gurdy, gurdy he sang,
Hurdy gurdy, hurdy gurdy, hurdy gurdy, gurdy he sang

  • This is the Zodiac speaking...

  • In 1967 when American groups like the Archies were yammering "yummy yummy yummy, I've got love in my tummy", Donovan was laying down the roots of hard rock with songs like this one and Season of the Witch. I'd give anything to get that thick overdriven fuzz tone on the lead guitar.

  • @aineiss there was alot more sound like this from many bands, starting 1965, sound like this starting creeping, specially in 67, that was the psychedelic times, when every thing got weirder and harder.

  • ...back when Mtv still played videos.

  • @ScarFail So CREEEPY

  • @EarnestTeaBass Even Jimmy Page said in a 1977 interview w/'guitar player magazine' that it was indeed Alan Parker on this session. Not Jimmy Page nor Jeff Beck. I believe John Paul Jones co-produced this tune and played bass, however.

  • Clem Cattini played drums and Alan Parker was the guitarist. Jones played bass, Donovan wanted Hendrix but he wasn't available. According to Wikipedia.
