Who shot God's shepherd in the head during the season of compassion?

Nonprofit offers $1000 reward to information leading
to arrest and prosecution of dog abuser

Tipton, PA -- January 7, 2011 -- Dogs Deserve Better, a national rescue and advocacy group dedicated to ending the suffering of chained and penned dogs, is offering a $1000 reward to anyone giving information leading to the arrest and prosecution of the abuser who shot a shepherd in the head outside a Catholic church sometime between Christmas and January 3, 2011.

While Christmas should be the season of compassion, it seems the parishioners of Joan of Arc Catholic Church in Frugality, PA missed the memo this year, and sources say not only did the priest ask the congregation to 'get rid of the dog' who had started hanging around during the Christmas season, but parishioners were reportedly saying things like "don't go over to the left of the church, there's a shepherd lurking over there."

Seems no one offered the dog help or food, and certainly not a home or a warm bed. Yet he lingered, making a den in the corner of the church building under a bush, tired, thirsty, hungry, and cold. He had nowhere else to go.

Tamira Thayne, who was finally called for help two weeks after the dog's initial appearance, was appalled at the state of the dog when she and her assistant arrived to help. "His right ear and head where pretty seriously injured, and I could see every rib. Yet he was terrified of us, and we had to spike some food with calming meds to even get him to the vet."

Surgery confirmed the group's suspicions that the wound was made by a gunshot that went through the back of the ear and up along the side of the shepherd's head.

Dogs Deserve Better named the shepherd Ezekiel, for it says in Ezekiel 3:8-9 "Behold, I have made thy face strong against their faces, and they forehead strong against their foreheads. As an adamant harder than flint have I made they forehead: fear them not, neither be dismayed at their looks, though they be a rebellious house."

Thayne believes in divine intervention. "I believe that a higher power was looking after Ezekiel, and I believe the members of that church were given a spiritual test and failed. Instead of taking in a creature in need of loving kindness, they shunned him, ignored him, and someone even came along and tried to kill him."

Dogs Deserve Better is offering a $1000 reward to anyone giving information leading to an arrest and conviction on animal cruelty charges. Please call the Dogs Deserve Better toll-free line at 877.636.1408 if you have any information about this crime against one of God's most loving creatures.

  • Jesus, you make 100 bucks sound like a million. where's the bed? Where's the dog house? Where is there ANY EVIDENCE that you actually wanted to take care of the animal?

  • 1 The parishioners of this church did help the dog. 2 they feed the dog. 3 they tried to call numerous places to get help for the dog. 4 they donated $100 to help with the care of the dog. The church is not responsible for the shooting of this dog, they are responsible for trying to help this dog. Guess they contacted someone who likes to sensationalize the truth to make people who actually try to help look bad. The main focus should of been who abandoned this dog and who shot this dog

  • Another reason to despise church, churches, the congregated masses of self righteous assholes couldnt be bothered to let in what WAS a lost, hungry dog seeking help from a human and shelter but NOW probably wont trust another human, even shy from whomever adopts it and basically be a problem dog forever with special needs and cares. Was it such the burden that not one single member of that flock couldnt take him home? Really? Nice display of responsibility. You're all guilty. Amen

  • Being religious doesn't mean you are a good person, it may actually mean the exact opposite...

It sure feels like America is F@#ked...

  • Honestly, being Catholic doesn't necessarily mean being a real/true Christian. It just means belonging to a religious organization. My parish priest loves to go big game hunting, drinking wine, smoking cigars & curses like a stevedore. He's funny, yeah, but I doubt he actually believes there is a God. I love him coz he's funny & he's my uncle, but I decided not to be a Catholic anymore after he kicked my tiny dog and she bounced off the wall. Guess he was buzzed at the time.

  • For all the "we are caring folks" bullshit spouted by religious people, I certainly dont see it here.. Why didnt one of them adopt the poor dog? As stated above in retort to their protestations of assistance supposedly given.. Where is the bowl? Where is the bed? None of you cared one dot for this beautiful dog, and I hope you rot in eternal damnation for your callousness...

  • Watched the video, read the story and comments on this page. Being a shelter volunteer I am appalled at the lack of attention to the dog. How hard would it have been to put the dog in the church and set a blanket down so the dog could be warm and sleep peacefully? All I have ever heard from churches is to keep the peace, dont see it though. The asshole who shot the dog should be in custody and get a minimum 5 year sentence

  • I am amazed that NO ONE from the congregation gave the dog a warm place to sleep, out of the cold and snow, and additionally, no one tried to get him medical treatment. Why didn't someone from the church (maybe the priest?) call a rescue or find someone to help this poor dog? And it happened over Christmas, when you'd think at least one person would've done more for him! So glad he's now gotten treatment for his wound, and will hopefully find a loving home.

  • @VickiOsb I think they deserve it.

You can't just shoot a dog in the head.

If I saw that dog, I'd freaking beg my mom to bring him home, even if it meant that I had to stay alone with the poor dog, in the cold snow, with no food or shelter, my only friend a poor dog.

  • @Death2Bigots That's not true. I'm a Christian and I love animals......I believe that you treat others the way you want to be treated.

  • The Church should have treated the dog like a child. Yes they fed him and called places and donated.....why did theynot get him inside to warmth and a doctor like this kind lady did?? THAT is the only thing the church did wrong. They didn't follow through. The person to focus your aggression on is the shooter and the abandoner.....they are the wrong doers. In any case, when someone comes to the house of the Lord for help....they should be welcomed with open arms regardless of race or species.

  • @MrIhateliers I take it that you're part of the parish? I notice how you've done your best to defend the parishioners, and yet said nothing of who might have shot the dog. Nice.
