This time lapse sequence of the Schultz Fire was taken from Route 66, southeast of Flagstaff, facing north-northwest. It covers 13 minutes from 2:25 - 2:38 PM. At the time of these photos, the fire was estimated to have consumed 500 acres with winds from the south to southwest at 20 knots, gusting to 30 knots. Wildfire convection was strong enough to generate pyrocumulus, some of which can be seen as bright white fringes atop the strongest updrafts. Photos of both the Schultz and Hardy fires can be found here: http://www.perezmedia.net/ceruleanarc/001431.html

  • The South Rim of the Grand Canyon can also be accessed via Hwy 180 along the west side of the San Francisco Peaks, so visitors can use that alternate route while Hwy 89 is shut down.

  • Thanks for the kind thoughts. It seems like everyone here knows one or more families directly affected by the fire and who have had to be evacuated.

  • It was very quick! The satellite view shows the first hint of smoke at 1PM. A half hour later it was raging, and by 4:15, the smoke plume had reached the four-corners.

  • @sunsetreptiles if they take the 64 they'll be fine, which is the main road to the grand canyon anyway.
