@racylaserjet I don't think qminusis was talking about learning the language. He said "a teacher can only be an helping hand" which to me meant theory, vocabulary, patterns can be taught but not an original, artistic approach. a teacher can suggest some paths for you to explore but eventually it's up to the student to explore them and find paths of his own.

"embouchure"

@qminusis Yes, no one is going to put in the work for you. You've definitely got to pay to play in that regard.
-
Yes thats what I say, every one has it as long he is ready and willing to do the work.
I once had a conversation with Barney Kessel about 25 Years ago where I asked him what I have to do to play like he did. His answer was: You have to pay the price.
The price is self initiative and thinking/defining what you really want and work on it. No teacher can give you this. Thats what Bob Mintzer means when he talks about sound.

@racylaserjet Exactly, it's about communication.

@qminusis The old myth that says, “You either have it or you don’t,” is strictly a myth founded on ignorance and the inability (or unwillingness) of those who can play to share what they do verbally with those who think they can’t learn. - Jamey Aebersold. It's a language that is teachable and learnable. The trick is the student being able to communicate with the teacher and vice versa.
Would this be helpful for violin players or does it mostly consist of information specific to a sax?

@christofrofosho Not really helpful for string players. Best for reed players.

Such a tease..
It is always interesting to hear how other people develop their own sound. Whether it is based on listening intently to their idols and trying to nail their best heartfelt impression, or being completely the opposite and sculpting their voice with little higher influence. I'd like to think it's healthy to be inbetween the two, after all if one existed without the other there would never have been some of the greats that have long since passed or those that exist with us today.

@RhinosMyProfession This is a tease. We're hoping people jump over to Bob's site to check out the whole enchilada.
