I note with disdain your use of quotation marks around the word Royalty. I would say that you need to be more tolerant of other cultures. The Japanese, like many, have a different system to that of the United States (Constitutional monarchy) which is still used in a lot of countries. It is protocol to bow to the members of the Japanese royal family. Secodnly in japanese culture you bow as a greeting anyway, so Obama here is just respecting the Japanese and their culture while a guest in Japan.
@AwesomeKazuaki though, I beleive that pope is below president in western culture due to the seperation of religion and government. Though, correct me if i'm wrong
@Randalthor993 - Overbowing is awkward at best but a also a sign of weakness in Japanese terms, especially in diplomatic situations. Remember that the US is Japans military protector in a volatile region. That is aside from the facts that Hirohito authorised pear harbor, American war victims were used as slaves, the rape of Korea and China, or that Americans have a tradition of repudiating Feudalism, Empire and Royalty, or that Obama is a maniacal warmonger.
bowing is a form of meeting and respect. even those above someone bows to people, and if equal footing bowing can become a complicated process. in the west bowing is looked at as submission, but in the east its different. its like a handshake in the west and knowing how long your suppose to hold it. though even in the west the handshake is disappearing to things like the fist bump
The emperor have 2600 years history. can you understand the means? The emperor 2600 years history is not an authoritarian and was democracy.
In the world there are a tops and bottoms. Emperor, Pope, King, Queen, President, Premier..... General and Soldiers. So, President Obama the bows was gentlemanly.
Incidentally, I think that a good rule of US has Indian King.
your right about that any foreign has to bow to kings and crowns etc. in many countries - A custom that has existed for centuries and it has never excluded the president of the U.s to do that
Americans learn little about world history in school - sorry to say that is is a fact.
