This is from the ABC Lateline news program, and is slightly dated as some skilled migrant types related to construction and manufacturing are no longer allowed.

Croats are more famous for migrating to NZ, but since 1989 Australia has become more important.

Australia needs skilled people . Mainly engineers. I have a masters degree in power systems and i am seriously thinking to migrate in Australia for a good job. My country Greece sucks and people in private sectors dont get paid for months!!!! What would you do if you were in my place?? But on the other hand i understand Australians concerns about immigration. You should see what is happening in Europe. Illegal immigrants keep coming mainly from Africa and Asia having no medical record.

And if we have to import we could just make foreign food prices higher through taxes.. giving Aussie farmers an advantage, then once all their products are bought out (thats if they are.. which you seem to think, Australians can just buy the foreing products.) Importing foodstuffs, especially anything which isn't in a tin, threatens Australia's local production, both from a quarantine & competition perspective.

It's stupid to import something when it can be produced locally.

@paspax I know an Australian who lives in Sweden on Swedish taxpayers. I'll guess he is just don't want to take work from the Swedes. Do I mind? No, because he is a good bloke that have gone through a rough time in life. And when he gets a job despite his broken Swedish, I will surly congratulate him. Because it is not where you are from that matters, but what attitude you bring along.

@paspax And we can't because..? UK seems to be doing fine with 56,121 km2 of arable land yet about 60 million in population. If they can do it with or without imports, then why can't we?

What about the Netherlands? They only have 6 million less people than us but 7,441 km2 of arable land... when we have 468,503 km2.... please am I missing something..?
