Covering an area of around half a million hectares, the Danube Delta is the second largest river delta in Europe, the largest part being in Romania. Following the collapse of the communist regime, the area has become an increasingly popular tourist destination.

With its unique network of interconnected eco-systems, the Delta is one of the most important sanctuaries for more than 300 species of bird, as it contains an abundance of food as well as providing a good nesting area in a totally natural environment.

The region's most important fish are sturgeon, carp and catfish. Although the fishing methods are somewhat dated, the annual catch is highly impressive.

The future of this fresh-water reserve, located on the eastern edge of Europe, appears to be assured as much has been done to protect it for generations to come.
