Today we are going to show you a quick overview of the different anti-rattle devices that we offer here at etrailer.com. The purpose of an anti-rattle device is to eliminate the excessive clanging or rattling that you may have with your hitch mounted accessory. The different anti-rattle devices that we offer here at etrailer.com break down into three basic categories. We have a sleeve style, a shim style and an anti-rattle device that has an integrated hitch lock. 0:27
The sleeve style is going to insert over the shank of your hitch mounted item, like so. And then the set screw here is actually going to press on the top of the trailer hitch. And when tightened down, it pulls the two together and eliminates rattle that way. The shim style anti-rattle device actually utilizes the hitch pin that is going to be holding your hitch accessory into the receiver hitch. With your accessory inserted, when you want to slide your hitch pin through, you take the bolt and slide it over the pin. And the shim here will go in between your hitch accessory and the hitch and take up the additional space that way. And we will show that in further detail here in a minute. And the third style, with the integrated hitch lock, again is going to replace the standard pin and clip that is holding your hitch accessory into place. And what it does is it utilizes the shim that actually going inside your hitch mounted accessory. What you want to do is go ahead and take the shim and you will slide it inside the opening at the rear of the accessory and manipulate it directly over the pin hole. And then once it is inserted inside the trailer hitch, you will insert the locking pin portion and thread the two pieces together. Once that is fully threaded together that is going to again tighten up and take the sway and rattle out of your accessory. 1:57
Next we are going to go ahead and show you in greater detail how these anti-rattle devices work on some of the common hitch accessories that we carry here at etrailer.com. We are going to start with the shim style. What we will do is take our shim here and the pointed side is the section that is going to go in between our hitch accessory and the trailer hitch. And the idea is, when we tighten this down, the bolt is going to pull on the hitch pin and the shim is going to insert itself inside the hitch. The combination of the two is going to eliminate our excessive rattle and jerking. And next we are going to show you the sleeve style device. We are actually going to slide it on to a bike rack, kind of show you how that will take off some of the sway. And again, this style just inserts over the top of the shank of our bike rack here. We will just line up our pin holes, slide our pin and clip into place. So then what we will want to do is go ahead and push the anti-rattle device back against the collar of the hitch and we want to go ahead and tighten this bolt down against the top of the receiver tube. And what that is going to do is pull the bike rack and the hitch together and eliminate the rattle. And you can see how it has taken the movement out of the bike rack. 3:31
And then finally we are going to show you the anti-rattle device with the integrated lock built into it. This style of anti-rattle unit is going to have a shim that inserts inside the shank of your hitch accessory. And here we are showing it on a cargo carrier. You can just slide that in directly over the pin hole. And you will notice with the cargo carrier simply installed inside the receiver tube that we have a lot of up and down action and side to side. Then we can just go ahead and insert it inside the trailer hitch and insert our pin section of the system. And what we are doing is threading the two pieces together, the shim inside the receiver tube and the pin. And you will see, as I tighten the two pieces together that the cargo carrier is going to pull right up against the trailer hitch and that is going to take out our slack that is causing the rattle. And then with the lock inserted on the other side, we not only have an anti-rattle device but we have a nice theft deterrent system as well. And you can see with that tightened down, we virtually eliminated all of the side to side play that was in the trailer hitch. And with that, that will conclude the review of the anti-rattle devices we offer here at etrailer.com.
