I've been doing this song for decades. I always wondered who actually wrote it- but its like "House of the Rising Sun" or "Stack-o-lee"- one of those old folk songs that has been passed down and been around forever. There are many pages written about the song online, but, I originally learned the lyrics off an old Bobby Bland LP way back, but later heard and liked the Louis Armstrong version better [which is closer to what I do]- but I don't even sing what he sang... the lyrics i sing have somehow evolved/devolved over the years of my doing it; but there are many versions of the lyrics...

This live performance was at the Tricou House [711 Bourbon Street, New Orleans] on March 23, 1991.

"SAINT JAMES INFIRMARY" [TRADITIONAL]
Arranged and adapted by DOUG DUFFEY
Performance [C] 1991/2007 Doug Duffey

This song is available on my "DOUG DUFFEY/ TRADITIONAL" CD [2011]- and for digital download- via cdbaby.com, itunes, amazon, rhapsody, etc. THANK YOU for your support- which keeps me doing what i do!

  • Damn. God-fucking-damn, that was awesome.

  • i also wonder why this pianist isn't better known. Probably one of the best versions of this song i've ever heard. We hit the south side regularly (chicago) and i've seen many amatures, masters and in between-ers. This guy is a master . NO doubt!

  • Les gars, accrochez-vous à vos bretelles, ça c'est du piano-blues d'ENFER !!!!!!!!!!!

  • five guys are first time on YT..

  • It's based on a British folk song from the 1700s... generally considered anonymous origin, although Irving Mills (Joe Primrose) is credited with the modern interpretation.

Mills was a Jew from lower Manhattan, which goes to show an artist doesn't necessarily have to "live the life" to write or compose as if he did.
