This music video was co-produced by the Nursing Students of Ontario (NSO), the student nurses arm of the Registered Nurses Association of Ontario (RNAO) and the Nightingale Initiative for Global Health (NIGH) to raise global public awareness for their concern for the alarming number of preventable maternal deaths [500,000] still occurring, each year, across the world — the focus of UN MDG # 5.

The video was developed through an invitation sent to nurses and nursing students across the world. In response, many people submitted their video clips and a composite video was designed. Participating organizations included: students and faculty members from the Toronto and Ottawa Chapters of the Nursing Students of Ontario [the student arm of the Registered Nurses Association of Ontario • RNAO]; nurses and nursing students aligned with the Beijing Nightingale Community of Culture in Bejing, China, nursing students at the Shandong University School of Nursing, in Jinan, China, a group of nurses and their families, accompanied by the "Overcoming Orchestra" from the Asbury Methodist Village in Gaithersburg, Maryland, and the participants of the "Nurturing the Nurse" Workshop convened at the Harmony Hill Retreat in Union, Washington.

Upon receipt of each submission, this video was created — in its final form — by Jingchuan Sui, a student at the Ryerson University School of Film and Television Arts, with an accompanying audio track created for this project by Leta Malcolm and Jeff Feeney.

In collaboration with the Executive Board of the Nursing Students of Ontario, the video's story board was also developed by Dr. Deva-Marie Beck, International Co-Director of the Nightingale Initiative for Global Health (NIGH) — to illustrate the concerns articulated by 40 nursing students who convened a related the Model World Health Assembly at Ryerson University in Toronto, in February, 2010.

Full attribution of all participants and support teams creating this video project are listed in the Credits featured at the end of the video.

This video is highlighted as one of the official projects created during the 2010 International Year of the Nurse, dedicated to achieving and advocating for all eight UN Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

Song Text

WE'VE Got the World's Health in OUR Hands

(Chorus)
WE'VE got world health in OUR hands,
WE'VE got the whole wide world in OUR hands,
WE'VE got the whole world in OUR hands,
WE'VE got world health in OUR hands!

We need you and your sister to give a hand,
We need you and your brother to give a hand,
We need everybody to give a hand
WE'VE got world health in OUR hands!

(Chorus)

All the little bitty babies need your hand
And the whole world's mothers need your hand
And all of the fathers need your hand
WE'VE got world health in OUR hands!

(Chorus)

We need nurses and midwives close at hand
We need every family, every clan
We need every woman, every man
WE'VE got world health in OUR hands!

(Chorus)

It takes food and shelter, peaceful lands
Clean air and water, close at hand
Healthy communities must be planned
WE'VE got world health in OUR hands!

(Chorus)

It takes everybody to understand
Town and country can give a hand
Every big city needs to give a hand
WE'VE got the world's health in OUR hands!

WE'VE got the whole world in OUR hands,
WE'VE got the whole wide world in OUR hands,
WE'VE got the whole world in OUR hands,
WE'VE got the world's health in OUR hands!
