The housing crisis is hitting a local county, harder than most. Home foreclosure rates across North Carolina increased more than 25% in the first quarter of 2008 compared with the same time period in 2007.

When a foreclosure forces a family out of their home they often leave their pets behind. The animals either end up at the shelter or wander the streets.

The SPCA and the Guilford County Animal Shelter took in 60 pets from foreclosure last month.

As more families lose their home to foreclosure, shelter employees fear more animals will end up unwanted.
