Bedřich Smetana - Overture of The Bartered Bride

Bedřich Smetana (Litomyšl, actual República Checa, 2 de marzo de 1824 - Praga, 12 de mayo de 1884) fue un compositor checo.

Biografía:
Bedřich Smetana nació en Bohemia. Su padre era elaborador de cerveza. De niño, estudió piano y violín. Fue a Praga a estudiar música, y llegó a trabajar como maestro con el conde Leopold Thun. Editó sus primeras obras y fundó una escuela de música en 1848 gracias al apoyo financiero de Franz Liszt. Se comprometió con el movimiento nacionalista checo.

En 1856, Smetana se traslada a Gotemburgo, en donde trabajará de profesor, de director de orquesta y de músico de cámara. Al regresar a Praga en 1863, funda otra escuela de música, con el objetivo de promocionar la música checa. Alcanzó el rango de director de orquesta en la ópera de Praga en 1866.

En 1874, y debido a una sordera (consecuencia de la sífilis), tuvo que dejar sus funciones de director de orquesta, dedicándose en exclusiva a la composición. Smetana fue ingresado en un hospital psiquiátrico en Praga en 1883. Murió en dicha ciudad el 12 de mayo de 1884.

Bedřich SmetanaSmetana fue el primer compositor que utilizó elementos específicamente checos en su música. Sus óperas se basan en temas checos y utilizó muchos ritmos y melodías del folklore checo en sus composiciones. Los Brandemburgueses en Bohemia es la primera ópera escrita totalmente en checo. Influyó notablemente en Antonín Dvořák y Leoš Janáček.

@soami2u I think the orchestra is Philharmonia Slavonica and the conductor Alfred Scholz, because this sounds perfectly identical to what I have on one CD which is a compilation of some of Smetana's compositions performed by that orchestra and conducted by that conductor.

@nelassov Of course the orchestra is the Czech Philharmonic,and the conductor is the renowned Karel Ancerl.The recording was made in the Rudolfinum on the 11th and12th of September 1958......(The Supraphon catalog number is SU1996-2031) hope this helps.

Supposedly our high school orchestra is playing this... I get the feeling that it's not going to work out so well. The strings could probably do it, but it's probably too difficult for the winds.
