Roger Grimsby died in June 1995. It's somewhat surprising that the best coverage of this came from the one station he did not work at - WCBS. But by 1995, WCBS employed key members of the 1980-1986 Eyewitness News team - so they were in better position than anyone to provide reflection.

Michele Marsh chairs this discussion with Lou Young, John Johnson, John Slattery, and Magee Hickey. John Johnson was just hired at WCBS to be the 6pm and 11pm anchor - he had not even started his new job yet.

The discussion features some very interesting anecdotes and revelations about Roger Grimsby. Included here is in-depth discussion on the Mara Wolinski incident.

Young and Slattery are still with the station today; Johnson, Marsh, and Hickey were all dispatched as part of 2's infamous 1996 mass firings although Hickey was later hired back.

  • HulkieD,

Thanks for this video. I did not knew you had any NYC videos. Do you have any more WCBS videos?

  • Then After Applegate left the WBBM GM post then ex KGO and WLS GM Joe Ahern took Applegates WBBM spot.

  • @pooka5472 He took the day off and was out of sorts that day.

  • rest in peace

  • @pooka5472 Ernie was the Ch. 2 anchor when this segment was taped. Probably too busy to sit.

  • Hey, where's Ernie Anastos? He worked with Roger Grimsby as well.

  • Grimsby, in a sense, was seen on WCBS after his firing from WABC - in a short clip of his speaking at the memorial for Roger Sharp who died a week after Grimsby's firing in 1986. But in terms of actually working there, yes, that was the one channel Roger never worked at.

  • Applegate never work for WFLD. He did become VP and GM at KCBS in LA after WBBM.

  • Roger Grimsby is very influential in the Bay Area he created the News scene concept under ABC Management with his bay area replacements like Van Amburg, Jerry Jensen and Pete Wilson. Grimsby made sure the Bay Area Stations did not go tabloidal and made KGO the most respected ABC O&O.
