Actually they are referred to as tribute bands. Some are good some are not, but the intent is usually to recreate the experience of seeing the actual band, often in a more intimate setting. A cover is merely an artist playing a song someone else has written. A cover band is a band that performs other peoples material primarily or (more often) exclusively.

Intriging -- I see that these rather odd gentlemen will be performing in the Sacramento area this week (Crawdad's and Powerhouse Pub). Perhaps I shall have to catch a peek of them live. I love the Stones and have seen every tour since I was but a wee lass in the 70's, but something about these guys just seems quite odd. I can well appreciate playing Stones music, but actually trying to look like them seems slightly peculiar. Alas, I shall reserve judgement until I see them live.
