With over 500 million active users, spending over 700 billion minutes per month on Facebook, social media is booming. The new media revolution is said to be the greatest communications revolution since the invention of the printing press. Because of the fast paced changes taking place it can be hard for businesses unfamiliar with social media to keep up; especially small businesses.

While social media may not be an immediately appropriate outlet for every business, it is important that businesses at least understand the basics of social media, how people are using it, and how it can be leveraged for business success. Social media is about meeting the customer where they are, engaging them, and learning from them in a brand new way. Small business owner Gary Vaynerchuk was able to take his wine business from $4 million a year in sales to $60 million in 5 years by leveraging the power of communities and social media.

The first Social Media 101 session provides business owners and managers with a knowledge base in social media and an understanding of the basics for business. Businesses will learn why it is important that they gain a general knowledge of social media channels, how they are being used, and how they can use social media to better serve their customers and grow their businesses. The following two sessions delve deeper into successful use of Facebook and LinkedIn. The "how to" and the business advantages of a presence with Twitter, Blogging and YouTube are covered in session 4.

The Social Media 101 sessions:
The Social Media Revolution: The Basics for Business
Facebook for Business: Connecting With Your Audience
LinkedIn - The Business Connection Power of Social Networking
Twitter, YouTube, & Blogs: Sharing With Your Audience

Ian has worked on social media for small businesses, healthcare, and non-profits doing both training and consulting for social media strategy and implementation.
