Erudite, eloquent and proof that class is sometimes a most desirable trait in British politcs. Lord Healey's mind spans the world of literature, poetry, bear-pit politics and music. Imagining him as PM in an alternative history is a warm thought.

Dennis Healey, a Tory to the bottom of his trainers. Hated living in Yorkshire which is why he moved south as soon as he could, a true tosser.

Well they obviously haven't - but he recognises that. He talks about the way in which people conceptualise themselves (I guess that's related to the decline of manufacturing etc). Another big change since 1979 is the decline in social housing and the inequalities caused by increased home ownership and the relative lack of taxation of property. Noel Skelton may have coined the term, and Harold Macmillan popularised it, but it was MT that made 'property owning democracy' a genuine reality.

Class divisions have disapeared? I wonder does he still think this following the 2008 crash and the subsequent 'socialism for the rich, free enterprise for the poor' government policies we have seen all across the western world since then?

Wonderful speaker for his age, don't agree with 80% of what he says, but a very honest decent man. The difference with him and the gobshites Labour have now such as Balls!!
