Pioneer Day, also called Ééhaniih Day (Rememberance Day), was held the weekend of August 1, 2008, at the base of Navajo Mountain (Naatsis'áán), on the Arizona side. This celebration is meant to commemorate the Navajos who lived in the Navajo Mountain area and did not go on the Long Walk. It is held in the fashion of the old-style Navajo fairs, with foot races, horse races, etc. You won't find ferris wheels or roller coasters at this event... or maybe not yet. It is an awesome event to attend.

I enjoyed myself. I showed up first for JMI (Just Move It). JMI's are fun walks or runs held over the Navajo Rez. They are also known by the Navajo slogan "T'áá hwó ájít'éego" (i.e. by your own effort or perseverance). I ended up camping out & watching all the events. It was awesome!

  • the Navajo whom live on this side of the rez do not like it, when people call it "Pioneer Day", because WE ARE NOT PIONEERS TO THE AREA, we are native to the area. When using the word Pineer makes it seems that we are not from that area. It would be cool if you no longer use that word. Thank you very much.

  • Pioneer means "one of the first to settle in a territory." The Anasazi & Hopi were here before us. Even Navajo creation stories tell it that way. This works for us. Besides, I didn't name it that. It's already called Pioneer Day.
