The guest speaker for the second of the 5 Sundays on Tasawwuf lecture series given at the zawiya of Shaykh Nooruddeen Durkee was Dr. Drame.

Having taught from an academic perspective of studying traditional societies, Dr Drame says that it is important to reflect on what has come before modernity and what people from the margins of modern society have contributed to the world-not just materially, but in a non-material way. Oral traditions are the key to unlocking the wisdom of many ancient African societies and to understanding traditional cultures. The purpose of this presentation is to describe oral transmission in some African traditions, particularly in the West African Sudan and in the North African Maghrib regions, which have been touched by Islam since the 11th century, and how those teachings are transmitted.
