Sometimes I just get carried away.
This song is being telepathically dedicated to someone.

Lyrics:

she's looking in the mirror
she's fixing her hair
and I touch my head to feel
what isn't there
she's humming a melody
we learned in grade school
she's so happy
and I think
this is not cool
'cause I know the guy
she's been talking about
I have met him before
and I think
what is this beautiful beautiful woman
settling for?

she bends her breath
when she talks to him
I can see her features begin to blur
as she pours herself
into the mold he made for her
and for everything he does
she has a way to rationalize
she says he don't mean what he do
she tells me he called
to apologize

he says he loves her
he says he's changing
and he can keep her warm
and so she sits there like america
suffering through slow reform
but she'll never get back the time
and the years sneak by
one by one
she is still playing the martyr
I am still praying for revloution

and she still doesn't have what she deserves
but she wakes up smiling every day
she never really expected more
that's just not the way we are raised
and I say to her,
you know,
there's plenty of really great men out there
but she doesn't hear me
she's looking in the mirror
she's fixing her hair

  • man, this is just absolutely beautiful. I don't generally like covers, but man, keep rockin it. i created this account just to tell you so. I've been listening to ani since i was 8 years old, and u more than live up to any expectation i could have had.

    KEEP FREAKIN ROCKIN IT!! :D

  • @whohawhee Oh, yer lovely. Thanks for taking the time to stop by...

  • Thank you all for the amazing support. I truly cherish it.

  • Guys...I'm not sure how to respond to all your kind words.

All I have is true, no-nonsense, gratitude.

  • You played this really well. You play everything that way. I just don't like the way the whole dynamic of the song changes when it's sung by a man. Responses like LaurenHoeben's are why.

  • Thanks. People have said that before, but I don't agree.

I still think...well..lets say that the mood I was in when I sung it was faithful to the original.

I still wanna play the part of "her" friend, not "her" lover.

    :)

  • Man, I can't stop watching your videos. I haven't found any that I don't like. Great Job !!!

  • thanx for doing this. it's so great

  • @Halfadrop Men and women can be friends, some of us aren't so blind to the social construct of gender dichotomy to allow the song's meaning to be totally fucked up by the fact you're a dude. It's perfect as-is, no worries; well done. :)

  • You gave me chills.

  • I really needed to hear this...thank you. I was nervous to see that it was a cover of Ani...but you are truly an amazing artist. I thank you again...

  • I really love this song and I think you did a great job with it! Awesome cover!

  • I loved it. I 1st saw her in 1991 in Olympia, Wa. I loved your cover, you have great range and depth to your voice. I hope you live somewhere you can record soon. Olympia and Seattle are good places.

  • This was the very first song of Ani's that I heard. My male English teacher, who came to mean a lot to me but died way too young, played it to me and told me that it had an important message. So I appreciated very much to hear this from a you as a man. But believe me when I say that i appreciated it for much more than the novelty of it being sung by a man. Your guitar work was flawless and your singing and frasing was immaculate.

Thank you for putting this out here and sharing it with us!
