I am the Author of Last of the Hard Hat Divers which recounts my father's story of the torpedoing of the SS Volendam. I was only nine years old at that time and lived in Port Bannatyne on the isle of Bute. The ship was beached in the centre of Kaimes bay directly opposite our house and now at age 80 years old I am able to watch a video of the ship made when I was six years of age. Thank you so much YOUTUBE bob sinclair.
Just been reading a new book 'Last of the Hard Hat Divers' by Bob Sinclair that describes the 25,000 ton SS Volundam, full of Dutch evacuated children in 1940 torpedoed by a U-boat very near her destination in the Clyde,in Scotland. The children were all saved by local boats and Dutch tugs operating in the Clyde, and the ship was swiftly kept afloat by pumps and taken to Kaimes Bay on the Isle of Bute. Presumably she was repaired in the Clyde shipyards and returned to service.
mijn vader was in 1938 / 39 commis de rang op dit schip, in die tijd voer hij ook op de Statendam en de Veendam, ik heb laatst nog een monsterboekje van hem gevonden uit die tijd
I was quite surprised to find this, and in colour as well, my parents sailed on Her in 1948 when they moved from Canada to Paraguay. They sailed out of Montreal and disembarked in Uruguay S.A. My mom who is still with us, now in her 80's was also very surprised to see a video of the S.S. Volendam.
Thank you for posting this. My grandmother and her family emigrated from Holland to the US aboard the SS Volendam in 1927, it's so cool to see the ship that she came over on! Thanks again!
Oh, that is such good quality color for 1937. I was actually forgetting that this was from the 1930's! It made me feel like I was there - and the promenade deck! My favorite part :)

Very interesting to me, as I was a 6 year old child passenger on board SS Volendam in 1940 when she was torpedoed and badly damaged.
