Ethan McCord, an Iraq war veteran and whistleblower on war crimes committed by US forces, talks about his experience as part of the first platoon to arrive on the scene of fresh carnage, as seen by millions in the classified video leaked by the website Wikileaks in April 2010.

Recorded live at the United National Peace Conference in Albany, New York, July 24, 2010. The 17-minute video McCord refers to, shown at the conference just before he made these remarks, can be found at http://youtu.be/5rXPrfnU3G0

  • This man is a hero.

Not because he was a soldier.

Not because he risked his life in the line of duty.

But because he thought for himself, and followed his conscience, instead of blindly going along with whatever his superiours told him.

Because he somehow, held on to his humanity.

An inner battle which many soldiers lose, durring the hell that is war.

  • People with PTSD know there are worse experiences than death. That is why they want to kill themselves, to end their intense pain. Many abusers hold positions of authority, so they are blindly respected. Society needs to wake up! Abusers act normal in public but covertly try to break our spirits to control us. Young soldiers are trapped. They are ordered to act against their best instincts and kill people they do not know. It doesn't "make men out of boys." It deeply injures them.

  • @fretbuzz1979 Weapons are found at weddings in that part of the world, so even if I were to concede this, that there were weapons on the group, you still have a long way to go to excuse what took place that day, the the terminology "mistake" would not appear in my description. Have you watched and listened to the actual gunship footage, you see everything that leads up to McCords arrival? I can only take it, my friend , that your experience of ROI were tempered by comparison.

  • @tdsdave Educate yourself my friend... I don't believe even Mr. Mccord denies that they found weapons on some of these guys. "Murder" is a RIDICULOUS label to attach to this. At the very worst it could be argued to have been a mistake. Don't talk to me about rules of engagement. My friends and I have risked our lives several times in order to avoid the killing of non-combatants and I am very familiar with ROE.

  • @SinnFein4ever So is Bradley Manning and he's in jail, stupid US government.
