Monday 12th of April was a major highlight of the the Great Britain 3 railtour and we see the train being hauled by 61994 The Great Marquess to Kyle of Lochalsh. After last years mishap, no chances were being taken on the climb from Fodderty Junction to Ravens Rock and, when I arrived to the same spot as location as last year, a NR man was hand sanding the rails.

We see the Gresley mogul attacking the climb to Ravens Rock and then making her way to Kyle through some simply breathtaking weather and scenery. Other shots include Corriemullie and Loch Gowan. Although I was wrong side for the light, I just couldn't turn down the chance for a wonderful reflection off the Loch!

Unique? Well compared to everyone else (apart from one other bloke) who went to the otherside... YES!

Finally we see the train arrive at Kyle of Lochalsh station.

These shots are featured on a new DVD at http://www.ovpsteam.co.uk/22.html

  • Beautiful, Philip, simply beautiful! It was a fantastic morning and you've captured it suberbly. It shows what can be achieved with a good eye and a steady hand. I was the "one other bloke" shooting into the sun at Loch Gowan, about a quarter of a mile nearer Achnasheen. I got more of the approach but the distant reflection was slightly compromised by a spit of land jutting into the lake. I've posted my shot from Fodderty - see my SteamAgePictures channel.

  • Cheers! It's probably one of the best days filming I've ever had. I was on that bit of land you mentioned, took a lot of wading through a bog to get to it! It seemed the best idea at the time, but it certainly did pay off! I've seen you're shot at Fodderty and I think it's brill. That was certainly a spectacle as well! Thanks again. Phil.

  • Incredible the way the smoke hangs in the air. I thought at first it was a still!

  • Excellent. Also added this to my favs. Love ur vids, great editing. Btw what camera do you use?

  • Great Video, 5 Stars!

  • I was on this trip so great to see some excellent film of it. In over 40 years of watching travelling by steam, these were some of the finest conditions I have ever known. The early start helped as it was cold so the smoke hung for amzing distances behind the train

  • Oh that was the most awesome steam loco video I've ever watched! Sheer fluke with the weather - no wind whatsoever and the air cold enough for the steam to hang... I've gotta share this around, you deserve more viewings!!!!

  • Philip, I have really enjoyed this series of films. This one in particular has been added to my favorites as its just so 'right' on many levels as Andrei suggests. Someone will have to organise a whip round to buy you one of the new wide screen High Definition cameras as with work like this a camera like some of the other folks on here use would only add further to your excellent body of work.

  • A stonking piece of film - superb !

  • Just brilliant. I am really enjoying this series. The images and reflections at the loch were absolutely magnificent and a testament to your planning and researching of locations.
