The Morse Code beacon on top of the Grant Building in Pittsburgh has been having some problems lately. Even though it's supposed to spell out "PITTSBURGH", on July 4th, it was saying "PITETSBKRRH" instead (http://tinyurl.com/n6u7js, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3fTYzoSDAS4 ). Now, on the night of the 13th, it looks like someone might have tinkered with it---depending on how you look at it, the beacon says "TPEBTSAURGH" or even "(EBTSAUSGII". Hopefully they'll get the right letters in before too long...

P.S. If you like this video and watch cable television, you might also enjoy seeing a hat I made: http://tinyurl.com/shambrero .

  • checked it out tonight with some scratch paper - copied it down about five times for mess ups and i'm pretty sure it was only getting as far as P-I-T-T-S-B-U-R. So we're getting close, but it didn't look complete tonight.

  • I think it was fixed yesterday.

  • You will be pleasantly surprised if you watch it tonight...

  • Hey,

I'm an alien and I'd certainly like to know if I'm landing at the right city...what do you mean no one pays attention to this stufff...

  • title made me lol

  • LOL cool video.... I heard the gulf tower tells you the weather.

  • It's up. Look under my name, or search on "Grant Building Beacon Controller".

  • I work in the Grant Building and have seen the mechanism -- it's not electronic -- it's a very old mechanical device full of relays and cog wheels. I'll post it up here for folks to see.

  • Even prettier at sunset -- and one of the most amazing city skylines you'll ever see during any fireworks display.
