Founder and Leader of Muttahida Quami Movement Mr Altaf Hussain has said that the MQM has brought about the revolution of the poor and middle class in the Urban areas of the Sindh, and it was only the MQM that can extend this revolution throughout the country. He said this while talking to a delegation of Pakistani and Afghan journalists who called upon him at the International Secretariat of the MQM in London. The delegation included noted TV anchor and journalist from Pakistan Mr Salim Safi, editor-in-chief of Afghani news website Khabaryal Mr Mirwaiz, and Mr Adil of Voice of America.

Talking to the delegation, Mr Hussain said that the feudal system was established in the country for the past 63 years and a handful of families from the privileged class had been ruling the country through different political parties. The MQM was the only political party in the country that had its origin in the poor and dispossessed segment of the society which was manifested by the fact that all the leadership of the party, including Mr Hussain himself belonged to the middle class.

Mr Hussain said that the MQM did not give only slogans for empowering the poor and middle class people rather it actually sent the educated, honest and capable people from poor and middle class in municipal bodies, national and provincial assemblies and the senate.

Mr Hussain said when the mass appeal of the MQM began to spread in other parts of the country as well the establishment of the time launched a ferocious state operation against it during which thousands of the MQM workers were done to death, including his elder brother Nasir Hussain and nephew Arif Hussain.

Mr Hussain said his only crime was that he had refused to sell his conscience and did not budge from his mission. He said that briefcases filled with money were sent to him on several occasions, but he had refused. Lt Gen Hamid Gul and Brig Imtiaz were witness to this. He added that Brig Imtiaz accepted this before the entire nation on TV channels.

Mr Hussain said that poisonous propaganda was done against him when he had refused to trade his conscience. Had he struck a bargain and indulged in the politics of making money, he would have palatial homes and bungalows in Pakistan and abroad and would not have been living in exile.

Mr Hussain said that he had been conducting the affairs of the party away from the country for the past twenty years. He added that there was no such example in the human history where a leader would have run a political movement by staying in exile for over twenty years, and the appeal of the movement had increased instead of falling down. He gave the reason that it was because he was himself an honest man and his life was an open book.

Mr Hussain said that his struggle was not meant for any personal gain for himself or for his family. He was rather waging a relentless struggle for the poor and deprived people of the country. He said that he was not corrupt and did not tolerate corruption in any form. The MQM ministers and elected representatives did not devour public funds for development like others. The funds were fully utilized for the development projects and for the welfare of the people.

Mr Hussain said that the forces wanting to perpetuate the status quo did not want the revolutionary philosophy of the MQM to reach in the length and breadth of the country. Whenever the MQM expedited its organizational work in the Punjab and other provinces, Karachi was engulfed in violence and turmoil under a deep conspiracy to keep the MQM entangled here.

Mr Hussain said that the MQM had not given up hopes despite all the conspiracies against it, and the younger generation in Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Balochistan, Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Kashmir knew it well that the MQM was the only party capable of ushering a middle class revolution in the country.

The members of the delegation asked questions about the manifesto of the MQM, and its policies and viewpoint on Pak-Afghan relations, war against terror, and various national and international issues. Mr Altaf Hussain answered the question in detail.
