(please wear headphones and turn up the volume.)

in this video, nothing happens - except everything.

when riding the bart in san francisco for the first time, the soundscape struck me. produced by the tram zooming through underground tunnels, the haunting sounds function as a nice allegory for the various speeds of urban modernity - how certain tempos spectralize others which are never but an echo behind...

the contrasts in light are also apparent - the dark underground exterior against the artificial lighting within the tram's interior, the natural light above ground drowning the tram's interior in darkness. the utter contingency of inside/outside, nature/artifice, above/below, light/dark is revealed, binaries delineated at a threshold depicted by the double-doors through which passengers pass.

working through these paradoxes, this video seeks to reveal the collapse of dichotomous categories of modernity under the imperceptibility of everydayness.

  • this is spooky! and hypnotic...where'd you shoot this? I knew this was strange, the lights were off?

  • This was on the BART to San Francisco Airport. The lights were actually on the whole time and, as far as I know, everything was normal. I just let my three-or-so-year old camera play on video mode.

As Walter Benjamin writes: "Evidently a different nature opens itself to the camera than open to the naked eye - if only because an unconsciously penetrated space is substituted for a space consciously explored by man."

  • Riding bart is Fun man.

  • lovely bit of symbolism, esp. the white balancing in/out of the tunnels. nice benjamin quote too. Any more on the relation to Lefebvre's rhythmanalysis? It seems a pretty underexplored way of looking at urban space. reminds me of work by david strang... very nice.

  • this could be stock footage for a horro film
