Noctis Doesn't Look A Thing Like Sora, But...

The Destiny Islands are a peaceful, generally ignored part of the larger country - until one day, two missiles strike the pastoral landscape. The outer islands burn, and in a very mundane sense, the world shatters. Sora and Riku, as Keyblade masters, are sent with the refugees from the most exposed islands, to protect them and find a safe place for them. Kairi, as part of the mayor's household, is one of the ones left behind, in a world of peace that is metamorphosing in a way she doesn't like. Black government cars and soldiers from inland, new curfews and defense measures, fill the place that used to be made of peace and sunlight, defiling all that is left of her home. She has a personal, private heartache too, in the midst of her crumbling islands. She's seen Sora and Riku together, saw them together as they left. She knows how many rooms they're going to need at night, knows that when - if - Sora comes back, it won't be to her. Not in the way she wants him. Now when she needs someone most, she's alone.
Noctis is one of those new, terrifying government soldiers, and has been since childhood - despite being barely twenty, he is the leader of those who came to defend the Destiny Islands. In battle he radiates icy fury and hatred; he is as far from Sora as she could imagine. And yet, at one of the parties at the Mayor's house that are only a flimsy excuse to briefly forget the war, she sees him - he is cool still, but polite, kind. Gentlemanly.
He sees her, too - a frightened high school junior who's seen too much for her age, with constantly pained eyes. He wants to help her, does his best to reassure her as further troubles loom, and she will have to fight. He promises her, as she flees the first attack into his throne room, that it'll be all right - urges her into battle beside him. Sora never let her fight for what she loved - for the home that's now destroyed.
And she starts to wonder about Noctis. She wonders whether he likes her, which he does. She makes him feel gentler - like he's not a beast, but a man, barely more than a boy, and one who fights as a protector, not a killer. Kairi doesn't know all that, but she knows she feels different around him. Like she can be brave, be strong, be happy again. But Sora lurks in her memory, and all the happiness they had together - she isn't sure she can get over him. And besides... Noctis is older than her. As he leans in to kiss her in one of the evenings of peace, she can't help but look away. With the age difference, and the fact that he's a soldier, a man of the world - what if they're too different, what if he needs her to change? What if he asks... things... of her? But he pulls back. Time passes, and he realizes what she's afraid of, and reassures her that she doesn't have to be like him, that she doesn't have to grow up all the way all in a moment. She can stretch her boundaries in everything inch by inch, and nobody will judge her for going to fast, or going too slow.
She makes her decision. Sora's gone, long gone - even if he comes back, he's with somebody new now. What they had was lost, and Noctis is here, ready to create something new. She won't be afraid of him, she won't be afraid to fight, she won't be afraid of herself, she won't be afraid of moving on.
A day after that, she's waiting on the wreck of a now-cleared island. Waiting for Noctis, who's a little late, to show up for the date they have planned today. He's a little late, but he comes, and she's thrilled to see him - thrilled he's not angry at her because she didn't used to fight, glad he's always urged her to be strong.
That first date leads to more things - he comes calling at her home, she cheers him up when he's depressed and gets confident enough to sleep on his shoulder after long, tiring fights. She becomes strong enough to face the battles bravely at his side - and when the next time comes that he tries to kiss her, she doesn't let him pull away. He's helped her be strong enough - no, he didn't make her strong. He just encouraged her to use the strength she's always had.

Well, Princess, this one IS for you. I wanted to have it done by Christmas, but I couldn't, quite - I'm sorry. It's as soon as I could get it done, though, and I put everything I had into this. It seems fitting to give this to you not just because of that, though. Kairi goes through a lot of really hard stuff in this, but she survives. She's resilient. Wait... what real-life girl does that also describe? Hm...
