@marceldem Of course, you are right; I thought of that too. However, what we teach in math class is that "every measurement is an approximation" - there is always a margin of error, even with the most accurate measurment instrument. In this case, with young children, I think the teacher was right to ignore the little extra widths of the 2x4 pieces left out. With older students, a question about this would be a good idea.

This was a great video for my first graders. They did an excellent job of demonstrating non-standard units of measurement.

Sorry to be so picayune, but the 2 x 4 width needs to be subtracted from the total body lengths or the classroom will be incorrectly measured. Better to put a narrow pointer at the spot where the body starts and ends. "Close, but no cigar!"
