A video showing how to install DD-WRT firmware from dd-wrt.com on a Linksys WRT54G router to add TONS of functionality. It's a really simple install, but most people prefer a visual aid over reading directions :)

  • You don't REALLY use IE do you?

  • For the purposes of this project, I had to be able to relate to the broadest part of the YouTube community. Yes, this included using IE on this video and Windows (as well as Windows programs) in other videos.

Personally, I use Linux rather than Windows. I dread using IE and generally use either Firefox or Konqueror.

Luckily the project is now over, so maybe there'll be a little more "variation" from the "norm". ;)

  • Hope this one makes it. Will this work with the WRT54G version 5.0?

  • According to the DD-WRT web site, version 5.0 is supported. Check the site for which binaries you need to grab for your installation.

  • I have a WRT54G but when I use it. It cuts off the internet and Makes my computer slow or people hack my computer. I'm trying to get my Nintendo DS on WI-FI so I can play Pokemon Diamond online with my friends. What do I do to ensure that I can play WI-FI without harming the computer.

  • Sounds like you have a few issues you need to take care of before you take this on. Change the default password on the router to something else - use passwords that can't be easily guessed (non-dictionary words at the least). Don't open up attachments from strange people, use an up-to-date antivirus program (FreeAVG maybe?), or better yet just ditch Windows and use Linux and you won't have to worry about any of the above (well, except the password thing :P)

  • Unfortunately, my laptop has integrated video. Yeah, it sucks, but I don't play games on it anyway...though it would be nice once in a while...

  • I didn't provide specific links because different people use different routers that require different versions. You'll have to check the DD-WRT web site for your specific router/version combo.

  • It's been pretty trusty for me :) The only thing I've done is upgrade the RAM to 1 gig. Been running linux and xp since the day I bought it. I use Windows for most of my videos since that seems to be what the majority of people use.

  • Check the DD-WRT web site to see if that specific version is supported.

  • You will have to go to the DD-WRT web site. I know they support other routers, but you'll have to check for yourself to see if your router is supported.

  • i got an linksys wrt54g version 5 sn: CDFB0EBC1257 and im on a 100mbits fiber optic connection. i was wondering what kind of speed can i gain by doing this? can i gain range on the router? i was thinking about useing it as a wireless ap for my network in my closset. its kinda hot there can i run an 12volts fan on the routers power adapter without overloading something? please give me feedback sens you done this and i havent.
