As you know we started treating Fred with doxycycline to weaken the heartworms so we could try a more aggressive treatment. However after a couple of days Fred got to feeling better and left. Virginia and I were heartbroken. As it turned out Fred had also taken to hanging around a Baptist Church about a half-mile from our house. The preacher there had also been feeding him but not treating his heartworms. After two tries of going to get Fred he would not stay. I dont have a fenced in yard or a pen and I can not bring myself to chain him to a tree. That is just cruel. We gave the doxycycline to the preacher in the hopes that he would treat Fred. I said before going or staying is Freds decision and whatever he decides I will respect that. Fred has been on his own long enough that he is road-wise and knows how to avoid getting hit. For the last couple of days Fred has been opting to stay with us but who knows for how long. After consulting with our vet we are starting Fred on a monthly heartworm treatment. The vet said since Fred is a roaming dog this slow cure method is safer and more practical. We are cautiously optimistic about Freds outlook; as things change we will let you know.
