This is an awesome instrument with power and the thunderous sound quality that Djalu looks for in a yirdaki. The growl in its 'voice' is impressive as is the complex bass undertones overlaid by a dense spectrum of mid and upper harmonics.
The instrument itself is impressive to look at too, with an exaggerated bell up to 13 cm in diameter and narrowing to a 28 mm diameter mouthpiece at the other end. The neck region, the upper third of the yirdaki, has a narrow bore which gives this instrument a good deal of compression. The bore starts to widen mid-way and begins to form internal pockets and cavenous undulations before ballooning out to a clear open bell.
All this helps to give a rich character to the voice, which sounds lower than the F fundamental that it registers in. The overtone note is also F which is convenient for those musicians requiring a didgeridoo to play along with other instruments.
The whole of the instrument has been decorated in ochre with the Rulyapa design for which Valerie Milminyina is well-known for.
