This True Harmony Minute is presented and written by Jacqueline Gillam.

Parabens are synthetically created chemicals used as preservatives in many cosmetic and beauty products today. They are found in lotions, cleansers, scrubs, liquid and powder foundations, shampoos, hand soaps, and many, many more products. They are so widely used because of their antibacterial and fungicidal properties and help extend product shelf life.

However, parabens have become controversial ingredients because of their effects on the body. When we use products on our skin, they are absorbed directly into our bloodstream. Once parabens are in our bloodstream they mimic estrogen. When we have a surplus of estrogen in the body we are at a higher risk for reproductive cancers, such as breast cancer and uterine cancer. In addition, several studies have shown high levels of paraben in breast cancer tumors.

Join Jacqueline Gillam on our next "Minute on Parabens" where she will guide you through product labels to help you discover parabens in products you may be using.
