I studied Shotokan Karate under Billy Golden and T. Mikami for 7 years in my teens and twenties. I have never been in a "fight" but have been attacked seven times in my life. As in life death attacks - not a pushy shovey name calling macho "fight" - more like robbery - gang - and mob violence. I was always able to protect myself by what I learned - I took the katas and basics and used them as a structure -my style is my own - my training is Shotokan. Thanks Billy.
@IEKUKATAKA Perhaps you didn't train with him long enough ;)
As for me. You're right, I am an American like you. Also like you, I have lived and trained abroad with other ryu. I believe in studying with and learning from everyone. By hating one another we only make eachother and karate on a whole weaker.
That being said, I respect your attention to the application of effective technique. It's the only reason I am alive to tell you this today. Best of luck to you as well.
@coolkmb3 This is what I know, if you are talking about Mikami, I trained with him also and he is stereotypical. The level of training outside the standard Shotokan kicking, blocking and punching is minor as compared with Okinawan karate. It is so minor it is essentially nonexistent. I also know you are 25 and American and very likely have no good frame of reference in order to fully understand what I say in my message as it takes experience to know, that is why most have no idea. Lots of luck.
@IEKUKATAKA I see that you are not a fan of JKA. That's alright with me. It's just an organization, a title, so I am not offended by this at all. I just thought you should know that posting "this is not karate" on my sensei's video may be missplaced based on your "about me" mission statement that I just read. My sensei did train in many different ryu when he was young. In addition, we do study sweeps, throws, joint locks and self defense in our training. I just thought you might like to know.
Depends wich school. Someone on my school practiced the 'sport' karate for a time, and when he came to my school he kinda failed. My school teaches effective karate, you learn to kill someone. There is still teached good karate all over the world. Also many different styles, but indeed you have some schools that give a sporty form of karate, wich is almost useless in battle.
@FearThisChannel I am not very familiar with other karate styles, but I know somethings about Kyokushin. In kyokushin you will be taught both sports karate and self defense karate. In sports karate you cannot punch to the head balls etc. But in the self defense one you learn to aim for the critical spots. It's very very very practical and quick if you use it right. You can break someone's collarbone and run away xD
@FearThisChannel my sensei is Japanese and I practice and teach traditional karate the true that last for generations, the truth is that it is harder and more serious than the karate these days but it is certainly the best. I do not think that traditional karate is dead but many teachers are way too lazy to practice and teach such disciplines such as this that focus more on the game than the art of DEFENSE
I have a question. Many people say that modern karate is not as effective as old karate, and that the karate of nowadays focusses too much on the sportive aspect. Is this necessarily true? Is it like, when you choose karate you will not learn the effective karate as it was meant to be?
THIS IS NOT KARATE! A warning from a JKA life member: I spent a long time training and teaching this activity. Because of many contradictions I saw and heard, I began a study of karate from it’s beginning; what it really is, why it was developed, how it was taught, what it’s general syllabus was. The JKA is a shell, they have eliminated much of original karate and have invalidated it as a martial art. Read comments my site, the truth is obvious through study if you are willing to see it.
