@lariral I had a German-American girlfriend and a German-American roommate in college, so they taught me some. Jesaja makes sense. The English translations sings "Isaiah 'twas foretold it, the Rose I have in mind." No matter what is sung, it's still one of the most beautiful things I've ever heard.

It is not Isaiah in the firt verse, that says "von Jesse kam die Art". Jesse was the father of David and Jesus is often referred to as the son of David. That means that he is from the line of Jesse.
In the second verse you will hear "Das Röslein, das ich meine, davon Jesaja sagt". Jesaja is Isaiah in German and now it refers to the prophet: The Rose of which Isaiah has spoken.
Tolle Musik, Hugo Distler hat Großes geschaffen. Es ist einfach nur schade wenn Distler im Fach Chormusik nur von Musikstudenten abgefrühstückt wird. Leider wird er viel zu selten öffentlich aufgeführt. Das hat die Musik von Distler nicht verdient.

Nein. Jesse war der Vater Davids, von dessen Stamm Jesus kam (1. Strophe) - von Jesse kam die Art. Hat nichts mit dem Propheten zu tun.
In der zweiten Stophe erscheint auch Jesaja, der Prophet: Das Röslein, davon Jesaja sagt.
