Kate "Ma" Barker (October 8, 1873 January 16, 1935) was an American criminal from the "public enemy era", when the exploits of gangs of criminals in the Midwest gripped the American people and press. Her notoriety has since subsided, trailing behind Bonnie and Clyde and John Dillinger.

@kc8vwo Really? Then the sign over her grave that say's the darkest night shall end in a bright day might be a good thing. She is buried not all that far from Albert E.Brumley who wrote more gospel songs than just about anyone... Ashgrove Mo. NW of Springfield Mo. Powell is Southeast of Joplin......

@ERINSOWNSON True. She had nothing to do with the exploits of the Barker-Karpis Gang they even have said they would give her money to go to a movie or shopping while they planned their next crime. Trying to keep her out of it did little good as she was shot dead in a raid. (weaponless) In order to not look like a murderer J. Edgar Hoover made her out to be the "leader" of the gang and the shooting justifiable. Love the song though grew up listening to it on a vinyl lp called "Disco Inferno"

me thinks she was killed by accedient but in order to make it look justifiable she was made bad by the FBI ! her sons yeah no problems there, but im sure she didn`t deserve the way she is potrayed (p`s i love the song i cant arque with that)
