Antioch graduate student Christine Volonte operates four banding stations for a study on migrating Saw-whet Owls.in Cheshire County, NH. Volunteers from Ashuerlot Valley Environmental Observatory help, along with other Antioch students.

In 2008, Chris caught 169 owls, five of which had been banded previously by other researchers. This is a surprisingly high rate of recapture. Here she removes owls from mist nets, bands thm, and determines their age by looking at the age of the flight feathers, discerned by the amount of dark coloration that is lost over time.
