On October 17, 1989, the San Francisco Bay Area experienced a major eathquake at 5:04PM. The epicenter was some 80-90 miles south of the bay area in the Santa Cruz mountains. This video includes actual footage from the bay area's late night news coverage from KPIX channel 5 and KRON Newscenter 4. This clip includes the early evening coverage when most of the bay area news stations were operating with minimal power. The clip begins with the late Dave Mcelhatton discussing the first home video of the car plunging over the collapsed section of the bay bridge. As the video is being played, the audio from the newsroom catches someone chuckling loud enough to be heard on the air as the car is seen plunging over the section (00.46). The clip also includes raw footage of the rescue efforts being made by the some of the residents in the Marina District at a collapsed home.
