Because of the discrepancy between my Alesis IO 14 and my Mac's onboard video cam the audio isn't in sync towards the end and you can't hear me talking to explain what I'm doing very well, but its meant to capture the raw sound from the amp, not the ambience or character of the room.

The audio was recorded using a Shure SM57 through an ART Tube Levelar PRO Compressor and an ART Tube Preamp then into an Alesis IO14 Firewire interface then mixed in with IMOVIE on a 15" Macbook Pro.

No Logic, Protools or any other nonsense.

Amp: Orange AD140 HTC
Cab: Orange PPC 4X12 with Celestion V30's

Guitar: Gibson SG with Burstbucker Pro's 2
Pedals used:
Boss DD-6 Delay
Boss DS-1 Distortion
Electro Harmonix Clone Theory Chorus/Reverb
DOD FX-17 Wah/Volume Pedal
"dirty sound"- Orange AD140 HTC Channel 2 Gain 12 o clock with the Boss DS-1 tone and distortion around 7 o clock. Guitar on "lead" switch.

This is essentially a gear demo of a song I've been working on and showcasing how you can achieve different sounds with various pedals.

  • Why on earth would you defile that gorgeous Orange tone with a DS-1?!?!

Watch my video response. I'll show you what an AD140 and an SG are supposed to sound like.

  • the DS-1 tightens up the sound a bit, in person it sounds phenomenal, the problem lies in the recording and equipment and the room it was recorded in, I use a light amount of overdrive and distortion so as to not ruin the initial tone

  • Dude; there's not really a reasonable way for him to drive the output section of a 140 watt tube amp without an attenuator.

  • hey, would you mind posting a vid of the dod fx 17 (in wah mode) with a high gain lead setting on the amp.

    cant find it annywhere

  • Hmm...to my ears, channel 2 is already pretty tight and midrangy. It's already got that natural tube compression.

My recommendation: Turn off the DS-1. Turn down the preamp and turn up the master volume. It'll be louder but it'll sound better. You'll be saturating the output tubes more. It'll sound warmer.

For additional overdrive, try a vintage 808 tube screamer (or some modified form of the 808 circuit). You might look into a SignaDrive. You can find demos of those on YouTube.
