Tough Guise: Violence, Media & the Crisis in Masculinity

While the social construction of femininity has been widely examined, the dominant role of masculinity has until recently remained largely invisible. Tough Guise is the first educational video geared toward college and high school students to systematically examine the relationship between pop-cultural imagery and the social construction of masculine identities in the U.S. at the dawn of the 21st century.

In this innovative and wide-ranging analysis, Jackson Katz argues that widespread violence in American society, including the tragic school shootings in Littleton, Colorado, Jonesboro, Arkansas, and elsewhere, needs to be understood as part of an ongoing crisis in masculinity.

This exciting new media literacy tool-- utilizing racially diverse subject matter and examples-- will enlighten and provoke students (both males and females) to evaluate their own participation in the culture of contemporary masculinity.

I can not believe what I am reading in some of these comments. It proves some men "get it" but far more don't and THAT is PROOF that divide and conquer is working and the competitive world we have been solidly programmed into is also in full force. Men were not always the dominant sex hard as it is to believe (did I bruise your ego?) but it is true. American men (western men) have serious psychological problems many of which were created by media, its so damn sad.

I totally agree that his stats are highly skewed and omitting key things regarding female violence, but let's not BS though, men are overall more physically violent. Some guys have very little control over their anger, especially drunk. Controlling it around women who are emotional assassins or physically aggressive is another factor, certainly. He's got a point. The media helps perpetuate stereotypes of violent men. Mix that with all the misandry in the media and you have fire and oil.

It also fails to point that male and female have the same ratio of domestic and child violence. It's just that female to male violence is never reported, and that false alegations of male to female are often reported.

It also fails to point that females are responsible of 70% of psicological violence, and that rarely gets reported.

This video is feminist propaganda at its finest. Men throughout history have been warriors, leaders, string, fierce, etc. why is that bad? Masculinity is power, and feminists envy it so much. Feminists are envious and power hungry so they want men to be less masculine to even out the power scales.
