Speaker: Michael Plummer, Professor of International Economics, The Johns Hopkins University, SAIS-Bologna

Location: University of Texas at Austin, LBJ School of Public Affairs

Date: Feb 22, 2008

Michael Plummer discussed accelerating Asian economic integration and its consequences for U.S. foreign policy. Initially the result of market forces, integration now is directed by states through special economic agreements, including free-trade areas. Dr. Plummer examined the stakes associated with rising Asian regionalization and prescribes a set of policy recommendations to build a solid US-Asian relationship in the future.

Dr. Plummer is Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Asian Economics. He is also Director of the American Committee for Asian Economic Studies (ACAES). He is a frequent consultant to states and international organizations, including the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). His main academic interests relate to international trade, international finance, and economic integration, especially in the Asian context.
