I timed the boot times of Ubuntu (8.10 with Array.org's eee kernel) on my Asus Eee PC 901, comparing the standard Asus SSD (solid state disk) and a replacement RunCore 32GB SSD.

Other than the array.org kernel, the Ubuntu installation is unmodified.

  • Booting uses read speed. Runcore's advantage is in actually running the OS and applications. The write speed is nearly 6X faster than the Asus stock drive.

  • The RunCore also beats the Asus stock drive for read speeds by roughtly a multiple of two. This mainly shows that the boot speed isn't mainly effected by this.

Like you say, the performance of running other applications is improved, especially disk heavy apps.

  • See how the runcore boot is slightly slower in the early startup, the BIOS probably uses a bit longer to initiate the runcore drive.

This actually gives the runcore even more edge in this test.
