Something different here - Video of Martin Diamond playing a percussion setup to a great track by the Sahnas Brothers. I do quite of bit of playing in live situations on cajon, and here I demonstrate some hand/foot groove playing using 4 different clave variations during the tune. The Sahnas Brothers are fantastic musicians from the Phoenix area where I live who also perform as part of the smooth jazz band Turning Point. Visit their site at www.sahnasmusic.com to buy this track (w/out my percussion) and many others.

  • Hi Martinondrums,

Excellent playing, good time keeping and very clean too. =) Martin, I have the same foot cabasa but it doesn't respond very well. Not very sensitive and doesn rotate when i press it sometimes. Any advice on how I can perhaps 'repair' it? It's brand new.

    Thank you.

    Sincerely,

    Kamal

  • @kamalbensra Thx for the comments. I have talked to the Meinl people about problems with the cabasa pedal design. In my opinion it's a very poor design. The only way to get it to stay together is to basically glue it tight. I removed the screw holding in the cabasa and put liquid nails on it, and then glued it tight. The springs also are prone to breaking, I replaced with those from the hardware store. This is among a few reasons why I now endorse Fat Congas percussion.

  • @flametal666 Great vid Martin. I just picked up one of these pedals and see that the contact is black rubber instead of the white felt...is this the latest design? However, the springs are still lousy and a bit noisy with the cheap felt liners. Can you tell me what you replaced yours with? Also, this thing doesn't come with a manual and I'm wondering why the adjustable stopper that meets up with the pedalboard arm is so oddly designed. Another use perhaps? Thanks!

  • rhythmic !!

  • @aokurochi The way he has it set up, any set player should be able to do fine, as the cabasa keeps a "steady time," which normally would be the hi-hat. The right foot plays the clave, which would be easy for the bass drum foot to do. Then the Cajon, you play with your hands. It's "simple" for someone who has done drum-set before, but might still pose problems.

And I'd bargain that guitar for something like this is WAY harder, having talked to my buddy who plays this kind of stuff.

  • Wow, you have CRAZY cordination, way jealous! I have hard enough time with just a guitar, ha!

  • Wow, cool vid! I just started playing cajon, and I really enjoyed your video. I'm looking to incorporate cajon into small group settings, and this your video gave me some ideas! Thanks a lot!

If you have a second, I posted a video of myself playing cajon. I would appreciate some tips and critiques!

  • @kamalbensra They remodeled the foot cabasa so it now has a rubber foot contacting the beads with much more action. They fixed it. Also saw that Meinl will be coming out with an awesome FX pedal which is a stomp pedal with 11 sounds like Kick, Cabasa, clap, tamborine, etc. They also invented this cool little foot tamborine that straps around your foot. Cant wait to buy them!

  • Hi Martin,

Thank you for your prompt reply. Ya the model has some issues. I could never get it to be played in time. But Fat Congas doesn't have a foot cabasa or similar instrument right? I have a Fat Congas Cajon. It's beautiful.
