@danb2212 You have made a very good observation. I think he was was reaching for his back pocket then the opposing players rushed him and the offending player. At that point, he really cant take any card out, he is obligated to try and regain control of the match.

@echtaetzend that is why the referee and his assistants for a triangle over the melee. That puts three sets of eyes on what is going. The fourth official has to stay at the technical areas to try and control what goes on there. But even then, it is impossible to see everything.

i think if the referee produced the red card as soon as possible he would have had it under control and the players would of backed off since he recieved what was coming to him. on a funnier note in soviet russia they drink a handle before games :)

Whether extending and locking his leg in that manner was an accident or not (didn't look like an accident), the send off is appropriate. That kind of reckless and attempt provides no other outcome than the injury of another player. The melee was would have been less problematic if the players would have just let the referees handle it without the pushing and shoving.
