India has free government schools, says Nilekani, but in reality they are disfunctional. However there are many (very basic) private schools, even in the slums, and the appetite for education is enormous. "I'm personally convinced that, in terms of the momentum on education, we are past the hump. There are a lot of things to fix, but over the next 10-15 years India will fix its literacy issues."
This Carnegie Council event took place on March 25, 2009. For the full audio, video, and transcript, go to http://www.cceia.org

  • Great to see people like Mr Nilekani is standing up & raising such an important aspect of society.

  • I like this video..really great!

  • Indian students are taught for marks......is that all?...it aint education!

  • @darklodvinay Thats BEcause Of The amount Of Competion there

  • Your idea regarding public education is wrong. I got educated in Govt school. Sending to Pvt school is just a social fantacy or staus issue in most cases...

  • the teaching sucks ...very theory driven approach ...no creativity ...quality lacks here ..

  • Not all the govt schools are disfunctional. I hailed from such a school and i am proud of it. I was given the most competitive education there..
