The world's production of apples totals 64 million tons a year, of which 27 million tons or about 40% is produced by China followed by USA 4.2 M, 2.7 M by Iran, 2.2 M by Turkey and Russia, respectively, and 2.0 M by Italy and India, respectively.

Commercially, apples can be stored for some months in chambers with higher concentrations of carbon dioxide to prevent ripening.
