This event is held every year January 14 in some of the Alaska village communities, and is known as, an Alaskan Native New Year celebration.

In this Alaska Native Russian Program, performers present the new year and twelve new months, an MP, an old year, and three old months (referred to as 3 old ladies). The old year and the old ladies do not want to go, and keep sneaking into the procession of the New Year, resulting in uproarious fun and comical performance. Many Alaska Native people live in communities influenced by Russian culture.

Join Paul Gray's Exploring Alaska TV Show on a journey in discovery of culture and history.

The indigenous inhabitants of the lower and outer Kenai Peninsula are the Suqpiaq. The Native language of the region is also called Alu'utiq, or Sugcestun.

The ancestry of current Nanwalek residents is a mixture of Alu'utiq (Pacific Eskimo), American Indian, Aleut, Russian, Euro-American, and Asian ancestry. This is a result of intermarriages which occurred among the Natives and different cultural groups, primarily following Euro-American occupation of the area. Most of the Native residents trace their heritage to places along the Gulf of Alaska, including Nuchek, Tatitlek, and Chenega in Prince William Sound; Kodiak and Afognak Islands; Resurrection, Aialik, Yalik, Rocky, Windy, Chugach, and Koyuktolik Bays, and Port Chatham on the lower Kenai Peninsula coast, Port Graham, Seldovia, and other Cook Inlet communities.

  • I wish this video had a professional voice recording without "uhm"s and "you know"s, so that it could be an educational video as the title suggests:(

  • I remember celebrating that as a child, home sick now lol.
