Interview: Zapiro on the lawsuit filed by Zuma - 21 Feb 08

Zapiro, a well-known South African cartoonist, is being sued by Jacob Zuma, the president of the African National Congress (ANC), for a cartoon published in the Sunday Times newspaper in September.

The cartoon depicts Zuma preparing to rape a woman who represents the justice system.

It appeared as Zuma faced a corruption trial, in which he was later acquitted.

Al Jazeera has this exclusive interview with Zapiro in Cape Town.

Zuma is just as entitled to sue Zapiro as Zapiro is to keep making his cartoons (which are great by the way). Both freedom of speech and the freedom to protect your reputation are vital aspects of a democracy. In this vein, Jacob Zuma does seem to be a bit over the top about securing his reputation, and probably just needs to relax a bit. If its the case that he really is too authoritarian about it, it's to be hoped that the couts will fix this. Carry on Zapiro! (PS MossadAgentWatching = wanker)

President Nelson Mandela personally thanked Zapiro for playing his role in satirizing South African politicians because its a vital organ of freedom of speech. I hope Zuma can comprehend the value of this maturity.

I think that he can draw what he wants, as he makes points that are real, although sometimes Zapiro goes over the line of freedom of speech to just plain insults, which is not really fair.

Democracy is for the righteous. They are the only ones who can use it to do good. America tried and failed. Europe had to become socialist. Majority rule is something good when the majority is righteous.
